Customer Reviews

Five stars for concept, 1 star for reliability.I bought my first orange tabby cat on November 18. It was a huge hit with my 89 year old father-in-law he has dementia, and in recent months has been pulling further into his figurative shell. He LOVES the cat. He believes it is real, talks to it, laughs with it, pets it, interacts with it. His mood has improved dramatically, and he is more alert. This cat is a FIVE STAR concept and a FIVE STAR addition to the lives of older people (& their caregivers). However, the product is ONE STAR in terms of reliability. My FIL loved it so much he broke it. We think he held the head too tightly, and ultimately the servos broke. The cat still meows and purrs, but it no longer rolls onto its back and the eyes no longer open. The heartbreaking thing is now my FIL asks the kitty why she isn't opening her eyes.Dear Hasbro Product Managers: keep it simpler. The cat doesn't need to roll onto its back for a tummy rub. The meowing, purring, and eyes/mouth movements probably solve 90% of the "real" factor, and are less prone to breaking. As a side comment, I now face a very real problem: my FIL loves this cat. There is no vet I can take it to. Instead, I've bought a replacement cat. Yes, you read that right, I've bought 2 $100 robo-cats in less than one month because this kitty is bringing very real joy to my FIL, and some much needed relief to his round-the-clock caregivers. The value per hour is astronomical, and this cat pays for itself many times over. That said, Hasbro would be wise to figure out how they're going to handle replacements/repairs/breakage.At any rate, I look forward to further improvements in this product line. And hopefully I won't have to buy a baker's dozen before we get there...3Fantastic inventionFantastic. My father is in a home. He has dementia. He absolutely loves her. Worth every penny x5Fun enough for grandma I bought this for my 94 year old grandmother to keep her company after remembering that she grew up with cats. I was a bit skeptical, having two (real) cats of my own, but decided to give it a shot.FAMILY RATINGS:- Grandma (4 stars): It took her a couple of hours to get used to it (she's not at all tech savvy and a moving toy freaked her out), but it's been a couple of weeks and "Kitty" (creative, I know) is still hanging out with her. Like one of the previous reviews also mentioned, she is well aware that it's not a real cat, but she plays and talks with it almost as if it were real.- Mom (4 stars): She thinks it's cute and enjoys playing with it... possibly a little more than my grandma since she better understands the logic behind its movements.- Me (2.5 stars): If I had purchased this for myself, I would have returned it (Reminder: I have 2 real, live cats to cuddle with at my leisure so this machine just doesn't compare). But, as a gift for my grandmother, it's really comforting to know that she has something nice to interact with when no one else is home.- My cats (see video - haha)PROS:- Fur is soft, almost life-like- Meowing sounds are cute, though slightly comical- Purring sound and vibrations are surprisingly nice- No need for food, water, poop scooping... or band aids :)CONS:- Whirring sounds during movements are really audible (you'll never forget it's a machine)- Occasional spastic movements with annoyingly loud clicking- As mentioned in one of the first comments, there is a bit of Satan in this cat. Just don't let its "sigh" catch you off guard in a dimly lit room while you're alone. It still creeps me out.OTHER COMMENTS:- I wish there was a better range of movement (i.e. when it "rolls back") and had more padding to make the toy feel more realistic- The toy's sensors are light activated. If there isn't a source of light coming from your direction, the cat won't notice your movement and react accordingly.4Best PalsMy husband has dementia, the cat was bought for him. It is a great comfort for him. He thinks it is a "real" kitty. He strokes and pets it and falls asleep with it. It is a great joy for him.5Unexpected Wonderfull Holiday momentWe bought this kitty with little expectation , could have gone either way. My mother in law is 86 and lonely at home, we adore her and I had this crazy idea after reading about these synthetic pets for elders. So I bought a $15 cat bed at store and headed off to the in laws . On the way my own kids named the cat creepy and scary and well you get the idea! We arrive and started to open gifts MommaJane, as I call her, picked up the kitty, named it "princess" and in one moment changed our hearts and minds, she loves this animal , in her own words I don't care that Princess is not real it makes me feel so happy and loved when I rub her belly and she purrs ! I am not generally a super sensitive guy but "Wow" it brought a tear and great joy to me to see how it has affected one woman , who I care so much about for to the positive! Technology can be a boon or to our social detriment! In this case I will chock it up to Joy, something simple , wonderful and unexpected. PS this is my first and probably last product review of any kind!5I was really looking forward to this item for emotional support after my wife died from suicideI purchased this as an emotional support companion after I lost my wife of 23 years to suicide. I was so looking forward to receiving it, and told everyone I knew that I was getting it. When it finally arrived; I have to admit that I was very letdown, and unimpressed. I was actually sad, as I was expecting it to alleviate some of my loneliness and depression over my wife's death.Whoever invented this, had a great idea. I'm sure that it would be of benefit to those suffering memory issues or other types of dementia. Perhaps since that's their target buyer; I should have passed on my purchase. At any rate, the problem that I found with the cat, is that it isn't lifelike. The meow is way too loud and nonadjustable. The head movements are very mechanical, and totally unrealistic. The purring doesn't sound like the purr from a real cat, and all of the various motions are ruined, as you can clearly hear the sound of a small motor while the motions are made. The bottom line, at least from my viewpoint, is that this is a fantastic invention, but it's poorly executed. I returned mine, and purchased several stuffed animals to make the agonizing loss of my wife a little easier to bear. The stuffed animals, one of which is a full sized labrador retriever, have been of some help. Although I know that they're not real; they provide me with a small degree of comfort, which is better than nothing, while I try to go on after my devastating loss.1It was an incredibly difficult and painful decision to makeMy family recently had to place my mom in a nursing home for long term care. It was an incredibly difficult and painful decision to make. She has dementia and my 88 year old father could no longer care for her. We worried about the time she would spend there when no one was visiting or during the periods of time with no activities. Because of his, I got her a joy for all cat. She has always been a nurturer, as a mother and grandmother, and has also loved animals. I am happy to say that this was one of the best purchases I have ever made. She enjoys petting the cat and the reactions she gets from her touch. It is truly remarkable what this cat can do. It is very lifelike and although my mother knows it isn't real she enjoys it nonetheless. The nurses and CNAs are all enamoured with her cat as well! She is the most popular resident on the floor! The 'toy' appeals to all ages. My 10 year old niece spent time visiting with my mom and her cat. The interaction they shared was very special and allowed my niece an opportunity to connect with my mom. After taking my mother back to the nursing home after Thanksgiving dinner, she was reluctant to be there as we entered her room. Thank goodness for the cat, which redirected her thoughts and allowed her to settle in calmly. I am so thankful for this companion for my mom!5000 therapeutic seal from Japan and $100 Orange Tabby was an easy one to makeJust ordered a 2nd one as backup in case of problem with original.Ordered a month ago for my twin sister who is suffering from dementia. She lives alone in her home with the assistance of part-time caregivers. In the last 6 months a neighbors cat has been spending much of the day with her and the caregivers remarked on the positive change this made in her life. The cat belongs to a neighbors little girl and her father recently talked with the caregiver and told her that my sister was welcome to have the cat during the day but her little girl was very attached to the cat and he worried that my sister might have to leave her house and try to take the cat with her.I felt I needed to intervene in some way. Perhaps the kind of robot that I'd been reading about would help. The choice between the $6,000 therapeutic seal from Japan and $100 Orange Tabby was an easy one to make!My sister bonded with the Orange Tabby instantly. Loves and nurtures and feeds it. Shares more with the people around her. Imputing much of her life history (scattered memories) to the cat and verbalizing these to the cat saying she understands the cats' past life. All far more than I could ever have hoped for.5Too much money for only 4 months of useI bought this as a Christmas Gift for my Mom who has dementia. She loves the Cat. While it worked it was great. She talked to it and petted it and it goes all over the nursing home with her. But with the last battery change "Tilly" has stopped working. I have tried different brands of batteries no luck. And it looks like we are out of return time. For $100 I expected more than 4 months of use.1A True Gift of JoyI ordered this cat for my mom, who suffers from Alzheimer's. When it arrived, I really had doubts, because the movements were loud and it was just the tiniest bit creepy. I was thinking of returning it. But, I took it to my mom and she loved it. She talked to it, petted it and loved the purring and movements she got in response.5
